AI Equine Fecal Egg Count (FEC) Analysis slide preparation

Collect fecal matter 

  1. Using a gram scale, measure 4.0 g of manure and place it into a clean, labeled disposable collection cup.
  2. Add 26 mL of flotation solution to the cup containing 4.0 g of manure.
  3. Mix the manure and solution well for 30 seconds using a tongue depressor.

Prepare a fecal sample

  1. Filter the mixture through 2-ply cheesecloth or gauze into a clean disposable cup.
  2. When the mixture is done straining, discard the manure that remains in the cheesecloth or gause.
  3. Let the mixture sit for at least five minutes; do not stir or disturb the solution.

Add a sample to the slide

  1. Place the glass slide into the Vetscan Imagyst slide template. 

Important: Make sure the name or barcode on the slide is positioned toward the top.

  1. Using the Vetscan Imagyst transfer loop, obtain a sample from the top surface of the disposable cup. Make sure to skim the entire top layer of the sample.
  2. Place 1 loop of the collected fluid onto the glass slide, distributing the sample around the edge of target circle.

Place the coverslip

  1. Place the coverslip, with Vetscan Imagyst readable in the lower left-hand corner, onto the slide over the targeted area of the slide template.
  2. Place the slide on the scanner.

Important: Make sure to position the coverslip on the left-hand side of the scanner.
