Slide View: Image Capture

Matthew Yarro Updated by Matthew Yarro

An image capture, also referred to as an image in this guide, is a selected area of a digital slide. An image capture usually highlights a cellular structure or other important element on a slide. The majority of image captures that you view within VETSCAN IMAGYST are automatically produced by the software’s deep-learning, image-analysis processes; However, you can also manually capture an image.

What is an Image Capture?

When viewing an image capture within the Slide View tool, it will appear as a colored bounding box encompassing an element of interest.

When viewed in the Quick Zoom interface of the Images View tool and in other locations within VETSCAN IMAGYST, the bounding box is a dotted line.

When viewing the image capture within the Images View tool, only the captured area of the image appears. In those cases, the capture is often referred to as an image versus an image capture.

Description

Image Capture / Image

An image or Captured Image is an area of a slide, which may contain an element of interest, that has been captured and classified.

Bounding Box

The bounding box is a visual representation of the area of a digital slide that you want to capture and classify.

Capturing an Image

There are two methods for capturing an image:

  • VETSCAN IMAGYST automated processes
  • Manual image capture

VETSCAN IMAGYST Automated Processes

If the VETSCAN IMAGYST platform has an automated test which has been requested (via the uploader settings), VETSCAN IMAGYST automatically processes the scan using deep-learning image-analysis technology. As part of that process, VETSCAN IMAGYST captures and classifies cells and cell-structures of interest. The captured images are presented for review in the Images View tool.

Manually capturing an image

To capture an image manually:

  1. Click Main Menu ().
  2. Click on the Inbox link.
  3. Click View Slide ().

Or

  1. From the Images View page, click Slide View ().

Or

  1. From the Images View page, click Slide View ().

Once you are in the Slide View tool, navigate to the area of the slide where you want to capture an image. When you have found a cell or element of interest you want to capture:

  1. Select a classification.
  2. Place a bounding box.

These two steps are explained in detail below.

Selecting a Classification

Before you can create a bounding box, you must select a classification from the classification listings on the left-hand side of the Slide Viewer tool. To select a classification, simply click the name of the desired classification. When you capture an image, VETSCAN IMAGYST automatically classifies the image with the classification that you have previously selected.

IMPORTANT: The last classification selected is the current classification VETSCAN IMAGYST uses for any images that you capture. Check the selected classification from time to time to prevent accidentally classifying an image incorrectly.

IMPORTANT: Each classification has a color associated with it, if you notice the wrong color of bounding box for a selected element of interest, it is because you need to change the classification.

Classifying an Image Capture

To classify an image capture, select the appropriate classification before placing a bounding box around the element of interest. When you capture an image (click to place the bounding box), the capture automatically takes the last classification selected from the classification listings.

Placing a Bounding Box

Once you have selected a classification, you can place a bounding box using the following key-mouse combinations:

[Option] (Mac) or [Alt] (PC)

The [Option]/[ALT] key displays a default bounding box. While you click and hold the [Option]/[ALT] key, you can freely move the bounding box around the slide image.

[Option]/[ALT] + the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 ,9, 0 key

[Option]/[ALT] + any number key creates a bounding box. Lower numbers create smaller bounding boxes, and higher numbers create larger bounding boxes.

While you click and hold the [Option]/[ALT] key, you can change the size of the bounding box by depressing a different-numbered key.

[Option]/[ALT] + mouse scroll

If you click and hold the [Option]/[ALT] key, you may use the mouse scroll wheel to decrease or increase the size of the bounding box in smaller, more-controlled increments.

[Option]/[ALT] + [Shift] + click and drag mouse

[Option]/[ALT] + [Shift] + click and drag mouse allows you to create any rectangular-shaped bounding box. Where you choose to click the mouse on the slide becomes the bounding box’s upper left-hand corner.

[Option] + [Shift] + [Command] + click and drag mouse or [ALT] + [Shift] + [CTRL] + click and drag mouse

[Option] + [Shift] + [Command] + click and drag mouse or [ALT] + [Shift] + [CTRL] + click and drag mouse allows you to create a square bounding box. Where you choose to click the mouse on the slide becomes the bounding box’s upper left-hand corner.

If you click and hold the [Option]/[ALT] key, you can resize the bounding box as desired. However, the shape is constrained to a square.

IMPORTANT: You must select a classification before you can place a bounding box and capture an image. If you cannot create a bounding box, it is likely because you have not yet selected a classification.

For information concerning editing an image capture, view Editing an image capture.

Capturing the Image

Once you have the bounding box sized appropriately and in the desired position, click the mouse. When an image is captured, the bounding box will appear as a solid, colored line. The color of the box varies by classification.

Undo action

Press [Command] + 'z' or [Control] + 'z' to undo the last user-created bounding box.
